Itinerary of the Desert Tour from Fes to Marrakech

Day 1: Fes – Ifrane – Cedars forest – Midelt – Ziz valley – Merzouga

Here starts the Desert Tour from Fes to Marrakech! We’ll pick you up from accommodation in Fes to take the road through Imouzzer to reach Ifrane. The city is known for its cold environment, snowfall, and Alpine architectural-style residences. It has the moniker “Morocco’s Switzerland” for this reason.

The cedar grove, which is home to the Barbary macaques, is our next stop. While exploring the jungle, feel free to feed them. We’ll have lunch in Midelt later. After stopping for panoramic views, we carry on to Merzouga over the Tizi-n-Tilghmt pass and the Ziz valley.

In the late afternoon, we go to Merzouga, a Saharan desert where you will ride a camel and explore it. You’ll take a break on top of a high dune to view the sunset. Lastly, you arrive at the camp, which is a cross between primitive nomadic tents and the opulence of a hotel.

When stargazing beneath a vast open sky, make sure to dance around the campfire and listen to the rhythm of the Berber drums. The desert camp will provide you with dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2: Merzouga – Nomad families – Khamlia – Merzouga lake – Erg Chebbi – Palm Grove

Getting up early in the morning to watch the breathtaking sunrise over the desert is a must, followed by a typical Moroccan breakfast. When you return to Merzouga riding camels, the driver will be waiting for you. We spend the day exploring the Merzouga region.

Other spectacular features in the region include dunes, natural lakes, mines, and fossil sites, as well as a wonderful oasis. These are ideal sites for a range of outdoorsy activities.

We begin our excursion in Merzouga by going off-road to an ancient eyeliner mine. Later, we pay the nomads a visit in their handmade tent. Sip a cup of Berber tea while learning about their way of life! Our next trip is the Khamlia village, where you will see Gnaoua music and dance performances.

We take a walk in the palm tree forest after lunch. We next drive a few kilometers farther to explore Merzouga’s wild lake, commonly known as Flamingo Lake. Have supper and spend the night in a hotel.

Day 3: Merzouga – Rissani – Erfoud – Todgha gorges – Dades valley

On the third day of the Desert Tour from Fes to Marrakech, we leave the desert after breakfast to explore Rissani town, the historical capital of Tafilalet. Rissani remains a key trade hub in the region, with a bustling souk on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.

After a tour around Rissani Souk, we travel to Erfoud and see one of the fossilized marble workshops. To get to the Todra Gorges, we travel via the palm groves of Touroug and Tinjdad. A large canyon through the mountains, with red cliff sides, has been created by the Todra river’s flow. These gorges are perfect for rock climbers.

We proceed to the Dades valley after lunch, passing via Boumalne Dades. We’ll make stops at the “monkey fingers” rock formation overlooking the Dades valley. Dinner and an overnight stay await you in a hotel.

Day 4: Dades Valley – Roses Valley – Skoura – Ouarzazate – Ait Benhaddou Kasbah – High Atlas Mountains – Marrakech

We continue to Kalaa Magouna after breakfast to visit the Rose Valley. At the Rose Festival in May, residents sell rose products ranging from perfumes and rose water to cosmetics. We then go through Skoura’s palm orchards. The Desert Gate, also known as Ouarzazate, is where we ultimately arrive. We’ll visit the studios where renowned movies were made.

We travel to Ait Benhaddou‘s well-known Kasbah. It is a fortified settlement designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The Kasbah has also appeared in several films and television shows. We arrive in Marrakech after driving over the breathtaking High Atlas Mountains and the Tizi-N-Tichka pass, where we will drop you off at your hotel or the airport.
